When a young couple first gets married one of the most exciting projects is finding and buying a house to make their home. Especially for those couples that have not lived together prior to their wedding one room in particular is paid very close attention. Bet you couldn’t guess which one… yep, the bedroom. Married couples want their bedroom to be a place where only positive and uplifting emotions are created and encouraged, emotions such as joy, love and happiness.

A growing trend in today’s society that helps accomplish the right atmosphere for a room or home is Feng Shui. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that deals with the art of placement. Feng Shui provides tips and explanations for how to organize furniture, hang art, and light rooms to achieve the perfect ambiance in your home.

First, Fung Shui experts recommend painting the walls tan, light brown, light green, calm blue, or even a mute lavender. These colors help to promote a cozy and welcoming yet tranquil atmosphere to begin and end each day. Bright colors like red, orange or yellow are associated with opposite sides of the yin and yang and are too ‘loud’ for the bedroom.

Second, it is suggested that couples choose a piece of art together that communicates love, happiness, joy, peace, and success to hang in front of their bed. This way each morning when they open their eyes to welcome the day they are reminded of those positive emotions.

Finally, a critical choice in the atmosphere of the bedroom is the way in which it is lit. The lighting should be flexible to allow plenty of sunlight to enter during the morning, but shut out the night once the sun sinks away. Experts say that when people are exposed to natural light when they first wake it prompts the production and release of serotonin, the “happy” hormone. Therefore, the choice of shutters and curtains is extremely important.

Couples should choose shutters that provide adequate protection to their window treatments and seals, but also allow plenty of light to enter the interior of the home. Open the shutters and throw back the curtains in the morning to let lots of warm sunlight start the day. The evening should be toned down with dim light. The shutters should be cracked to allow just a slight view of the setting sun, allowing just a bit of light to enter the room. Finally, once the moon takes the sun’s place in the sky the shutters should be completely closed, excluding any darkness from the bedroom. Choose thick shutters that also help keep the heat in and cold, night air out. Tightly pulled shutters along with closed curtains help create a little cocoon for you and your newly wed to feel close and cozy.

Shut out intruders, Just Add Shutters
When Susan and Mike bought their beautiful suburban home in a rural area with very few neighbors, Susan was absolutely in love with the seven-foot plantation windows that covered the front of the house. Twelve years later their sweet little stand-alone home is now surrounded by close to 200 other homes. The happy couple of course has made efforts to meet their neighbors, but both with full time jobs and two children under the age of seven, scarcely have time to mingle.  When they first bought their home Susan loved the idea of bare windows where she could look out from the living room at night and see the rolling green hills, but now that her once majestic view is obstructed by house after house she’s decided a bit more privacy would be nice.

Not to mention, Sarah, Susan’s little girl is four and loves to run around the house naked. It’s sweet and harmless in the innocence of your child’s mind, but not everyone’s thoughts may be so innocent and sweet. Although the neighbors Susan and Mike have meet seem very nice, they are not naïve about to reality of the world today. God forbid anyone in the area is a convicted sex offender and happened to be walking their dog one night only to look over and see sweet Sarah changing into her pajamas. Not to mention a huge intersection developed just a block from the house a few years ago and has become a popular stop for homeless people to beg for money. It isn’t unlikely that a few may wander around the neighborhoods looking for homes of opportunity. Mike would be devastated if that shiny, new 60-inch plasma Susan snagged for him on Black Friday disappeared one night when the family went out.

The more Susan thought about the possibilities the better she thought of having shades and shutters added to her windows. Her neighbors down the street had updated their exterior shades to a beautiful olive green that Susan found very complimentary each time she passed by. She picked up the phone and called down the street to find out what company they had used to update. After a short and pleasant conversation she was soon dialing the number for Just Add Shutters.
